It’s easy…
It’s fun….
It’s effective…
Q: What can someone who has never been to a class expect at their first session? A: Smile the entire time! To experience music from Latin America and all over the world including Salsa, Merengue, Belly dancing, Reggaeton, Hip-Hop, Cumbia, Bachata, and even Paso Doble.  It is only half about fitness; the other half is about letting go, feeling energized, interacting with people, and getting into the music. There are a lot of people using the workout to overcome things in their lives and enhance the quality of thier lives, not only to burn calories!
Q: Do I need to know how to dance? A: NO! This is not a dance class…it’s a dance-based aerobic fitness class! You do not need any previous dance experience. If you love music, this is the class for you! All you need is a fun attitude. The basics are taught to you. Most of the routines are simple and easy to pick up, especially if you come to class regularly. A few of the routines are moderately harder to add a challenge to some of the classes. The classes marked Beginner will not contain the more challenging routines. The routines are repeated week after week with about 1 addition every week to spice things up even more!
Q: What kind of workout should I expect? A: ZUMBA® Fitness is a HIGH/LOW INTERVAL cardiovascular fitness class. Be prepared to sweat, learn new moves and have fun! You should move at your OWN pace, and you will get out of the class what you put into it. The class lasts ONE hour. It is intended to be a party-like atmosphere, so unlike a regular fitness class, there is little to no verbal cueing, so watch my arms and body language. You will begin with a 5-10 minute warm up to get your body ready for what is to come. Then you will spend the next 40 minutes moving your body to all types of rhythms. Finally, you will cool down and stretch for the last 10 minutes.
Q: What are the benefits of a ZUMBA® class? A: It is fun, and burns approximately 500-1000 calories per hour and it is a great cardiovascular exercise with moderate impact. The music is programmed to go from medium paced to very fast, then back down again making it easy to keep up. A ZUMBA® class also engages your core (torso) muscles more than some other exercises do, thanks to A LOT of waist and hip movement. Remember to always keep your hips and arms moving for the added benefits!
Q: What should I wear? A: Wear comfortable clothes that you can move in (workout clothes). Because you will be twisting, pivoting, and sliding the best shoes for a ZUMBA® class are supportive cross trainer with not much rubber at the bottom, dance sneakers or aerobic dance shoes. Ideally something without deep treads that grip the floor too much to prevent the risk of knee injuries. Because there is a lot of side-to-side movement in a Zumba® fitness class, you should consider buying a shoe that is a "trainer" rather than "running" because cross-trainers offer lateral support. Below are some dance and fitness shoes that come recommended:
  • Nike Free 4.0 V2 (These are a perfect combo of sole shock absorption and sole flexibility; very comfortable; great support.)
  • Nike Danzante Star
  • Nike Air Max- Finish Line ( I have these and they are so comfortable! However the sole is very thick and not very flexible.)
  • Nike Musique III- shop Kohl's
  • Ryka Intensity XT3-thicker soul
  • Ryka studio D- shop
  • Reebok Zig Sneaker- Finish Line ( I recommend the lower cross trainer over the running shoe)
  • Nike Shox Electro
  • there are many more but in general you are looking for a cross training shoe with shock absorbtion!
In addition, you also need some cushion support so you may want to also invest in some inserts for your dance shoes. Keep in mind what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for you, you may have to trial and error before you find that perfect shoe to dance in.
Q: What should I bring? A: Lots of water! Remember to stay hydrated before, during and after class. A towel…You will be sweating! A friend…Get friends to come with you to ZUMBA® class, this just makes the experience more fun and gives you the extra boost to stay motivated and fulfill your fitness goals! Plus you get a discount for referring people!!
Q: I CAN’T GET THE STEPS, WHAT SHOULD I DO? A: Don’t worry! This is not a dance contest and no one is judging your skills! Just make up something else and keep moving. No one is looking at you, because they are too busy looking at the INSTRUCTORS FEET and having fun! The good news is that after you come to class a few times you will be able to do it without thinking. Then once you learn the movements, USE YOUR BODY AND FEEL THE MUSIC!  I encourage you to stick with it as there is no better feeling than the pride of accomplishment when you start learning fun dance moves and genres that you can take with you forever. Like with anything, to learn DANCE we just have to PRACTICE!!!  Go at your own rate. You don’t have to copy exactly what I’m doing or at the same intensity. Also, do not get frustrated if your hips and body do not move like mine or someone else’s…everyone is different and will move in their own way.
We look forward to seeing you in classes.
